My friend was still having issues with his mail on one of his iPads, it was refusing to send, the outgoing mail just sat obstinately in the outbox but refused to go any further. After much probing I discovered the a second 'Alternate' eMail SMTP server had been set, with garbled settings. I deleted that eMail account on that iPad and re entered the settings correctly; it has been OK since.
