I have run via a UPS for at least the last ten years after various issues related to spikes and brown outs. Wouldn't dream of being without one now.

I believe the APC to be among the best. That's what I have. They have a calculator to work out the optimum spec for your needs.

I have a UPS-650 for Michaels desktop and a Back-UPS RS 1500 which was for my old massive liquid cooled tower Mac G5. I run everything through it to cover surges and spikes. It's surprising how often it cuts in even though the mains appears to be OK.
