Jonathan, It's interesting that you said the hotspot wasn't too bad using the external filter. Clearly putting the filter inside is exacerbating this effect.You could compare a few shots with and without an external filter. A 720nm shouldn't effect your exposure very much and it may reduce the hotspot.
